Detroit WOW and Chase sponsor
Freedom Weekend Homeownership Expo (Sat., 4/29)

Get information about available, affordable homes

Detroit, MI -- April 14, 2006 -- Freedom Institute will present its annual Freedom Weekend Homeownership Expo on Saturday, April 29, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Cobo Center - Wayne Hall. Also included in the Expo is the Second Annual Parade of Homes Bus Tour sponsored by Chase Bank. Last year, over 80 people visited new development projects that featured homes for low to moderate income home buyers. Buses will depart periodically from Cobo Center’s Atwater exit. This event is free and open to the public.

U.S. Representatives Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick and John Conyers, Jr. (14th and 15th districts, respectively), who are also members of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), are leading the Detroit With Ownership Wealth (WOW) Program designed to promote homeownership in the districts they serve.

Detroit WOW is co-sponsoring Freedom Weekend’s Homeownership Expo and will host workshops that will focus on providing basic information about becoming a homeowner, i.e., budgeting, credit counseling, learning how to select a realtor and viewing floor plans on newly constructed and rehabilitated homes.  Attendees may speak directly to financial institutions, mortgage lenders, and receive information about available, “affordable” homes ranging in price from $80,000 to $160,000.

This program was initiated by policymakers responsible for establishing national housing guidelines.  Based on several years of success, the WOW Program has become a national model to benefit, support, educate and counsel minorities seeking homeownership.

The Detroit WOW is a coalition made up of a broad base of financial institutions, realtors, intermediaries, non-profit developers, trade associations, homeownership counseling organizations and other stakeholders committed to providing sound homeownership opportunities to citizens of the Detroit metropolitan area.

The Freedom Institute, the producer of Freedom Weekend, is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-partisan organization designed to be an urban think tank to address issues of public policy that affect the quality of life.

The corporate sponsors for Freedom Weekend V -- Thursday, April 27, 2006 to Friday, April 29, 2006 -- are Dalessandro Contracting Group, Realcheaphouse.com, Comcast, Chase and Charter One Bank.
