Daniel Gilbert joins Freedom Weekend as Keynote Speaker
for the 5th Annual Power Economics Luncheon
Detroit, MI—April 23, 2006 – The Freedom Institute announced Friday that Daniel Gilbert, Chairman and Founder of Quicken Loans/Rock Financial, and majority owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team, will be the keynote speaker for the 5th Annual Power Economics Luncheon, Thursday, April 27. The Luncheon will be held in Cobo Room W1-55 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm. This Freedom Weekend event is part of the Power Economics Summit.
Gilbert was born in Detroit and has lived in the Detroit area his entire life. He recently made headlines when he became majority owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers; however, he earned his initial acclaim as Chairman and Founder of Quicken Loans Inc. which consists of Quicken Loans, the nation’s largest online home mortgage lender, and Rock Financial, Michigan’s largest mortgage company. Together, under the Quicken Loans and Rock Financial brands, the company closed more than $16 billion in residential home loans in 2005.
Gilbert’s companies employ more than 5,000 people. Quicken Loans/Rock Financial has been ranked a Top 15 “Best Place to Work in America” by FORTUNE magazine for three consecutive years. Computerworld Magazine recently ranked the company #1 on its “Best Places to Work in Technology” list.
Since acquiring the Cavaliers in March 2005, Gilbert has led a complete overhaul of the front office executive team, coaching staff, player personnel and completed a $15 million renovation of the newly named “Quicken Loans Arena,” known as “The Q.”
Gilbert is the president of JARC, a non-profit organization providing housing and services to the developmentally disabled in southeast Michigan, and sits on the board of the Children’s Tumor Foundation (formerly the Neurofibromatosis Foundation). He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. Through the company’s Rock in the Community program, employees volunteer their time and resources to a wide-variety of local causes. Rock Financial also is the naming sponsor for Junior Achievement’s Finance Park, a program in development in downtown Detroit that will teach personal finance skills to area youth.
